Description

Event Description:

The Anarchist Emma Goldman said, "If I can't dance to it, it's not my revolution."

Kick up your heels, and join us for a tour of the neighborhood that shaped her freewheeling philosophy. As we wind our way between 14th Street and Houston Street, we'll uncover the area's rebellious past. Along the way, we'll meet the Rebel Girl and the Priestess of Anarchy, learn about the saloon known as the "most famous radical center in New York" and discover which nightclub has been an idyllic place of controversy and entertainment for over a century.

Event Itinerary:

  1. We'll begin at Webster Hall, and learn the radical history of this legendary night club.
  2. Then we'll head to Union Square and learn why this area has nothing -- and everything -- to do with unions.
  3. Next we'll visit the home of "the Priestess of Anarchy" aka "The Most Dangerous Woman in America."
  4. From there, we'll find out how a neo-Moorish entertainment palace joined the Socialist Movement.
  5. And see the first free circulating library in New York City.
  6. Then, we'll find out who taught at an Anarchist Education Collective on St. Marks Place.
  7. Next, we're off to Cooper Union, home to "whatsoever things are true."
  8. Then, we'll explore the block where anarchists danced, Warhol's factory kids frolicked, and a socialist speakeasy still thrives.
  9. Finally, we'll finish on East 1st Street, at the "most radical center in New York," that was once "the post office and information center for the underground of the Revolution." We'll see how activism is in full flower to this day!
